How to rent a car in Hong Kong – and why you should!
If you prefer exploring the city sans the hassle of navigating public transportation, getting a car rental in Hong Kong can offer a unique and exciting way to experience the city and its surrounding areas!
Plus, Hong Kong has so much more to offer than just its bustling city center. By renting a car, you can easily venture out to the countryside, beaches, and other hidden gems that are difficult to access by public transportation. It’s an entire adventure in itself, maneuvering through the winding roads and hills.
But doesn't Hong Kong drive on the left side of the road? Yes, and if that's what's worrying you, we suggest starting small and taking it easy. That means picking a small car or at least one you can easily familiarize yourself with. Get to know your vehicle and take it out on a test run in the parking lot before heading out and beyond the city. Always remember: Don't text and drive. And also, defensive driving is key!
Ready to hit the road now? First, your chariot awaits, and getting it is pretty simple – just book a car rental right here on Klook! Just punch in your travel dates, input your pickup and drop-off location (for Hong Kong, it’s the Hong Kong International Airport), and finally choose the vehicle you want!

1. Hong Kong Disneyland
Grab your mouse ears and drive into a world of fantasy and adventure at Hong Kong Disneyland! Whether you're a die-hard Disney fan or just looking for a fun day out, this theme park is not to be missed. Don't let its size fool you! Though it's the smallest in the world, there's still tons to eat, drink, and do at Hong Kong Disneyland – and at least here, it's an easier challenge to take on all the park has to offer!
For one, you can journey through time and space on the exciting Hyperspace Mountain rollercoaster. If you don't mind the dizzy, take a spin on Mad Hatter's Tea Cups or blast off to infinity and beyond on Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters.
For those seeking a more relaxed pace, enjoy a leisurely boat ride through the jungle on the Jungle River Cruise or take a stroll down Main Street, U.S.A., and enjoy the vintage shops and street performances. Don't miss out on the nighttime spectaculars, including the Disney Paint the Night Parade and the stunning fireworks show over the Castle of Magical Dreams!
Important Note: The parking fee at Hong Kong Disneyland is HKD 280 per day.
2. Lantau Island
Home to the famous Big Buddha (and Disneyland), Lantau Island is a great place to spend a day exploring. You can drive up to the peak for a panoramic view of the island, or take a cable car ride to see the Big Buddha up close.
You can also drive down to the historic Tai O Fishing Village, a quaint and charming community that is known for its stilt houses and traditional way of life. Another great spot to appreciate Hong Kong’s culture is the Po Lin Monastery, an ancient and ornate Buddhist temple that’s been around for over a century – not a bad spot for a delish vegetarian lunch, either! By driving to Lantau Island, you have the flexibility to visit these attractions on your own schedule and avoid the crowds that can often be found on organized tours.
3. Ocean Park
Make a splash and experience the magic of the sea at Ocean Park Hong Kong! Get ready to scream your lungs out on adrenaline-pumping rides like the Hair Raiser and the Abyss Drop, or take a peaceful cable car ride for stunning views of the park and the surrounding sea. We can’t guarantee that you’ll make it out of Ocean Park completely dry, so definitely bring a change of clothes and store them easily in your rental car’s trunk!
Important Note: The parking fee at Ocean Park Hong Kong varies, depending on the day you visit. Don’t forget your Octopus Card, as this is the only mode of payment.

4. Water World Ocean Park
Can’t get enough of Hong Kong Ocean Park and want to get in on even more thrilling experiences? Drive to the nearby Water World Ocean Park, Asia’s first-ever all-year-round water park with 27 indoor and outdoor activities across five different themed zones! Beat the heat at Whiskers’ Splash, a refreshing, sprinkler-filled playground for kids and kids at heart. For something more chill, drift or swim down Riptide, a long and winding river with an ocean view that heads straight to an infinity pool.
This is a totally different attraction from Ocean Park Hong Kong, though, so we recommend hitting up these parks on two separate days – unless, of course, you’re up for the challenge.
Important Note: There’s a parking fee of HKD 50 per hour with a maximum fee of HKD 250 per day, calculated until 00:00 of the same day. You can reserve your parking spot on their website as the park can get crowded, especially on peak days! Also, the parking terminal only accepts payment via Octopus Card, so don’t forget it!
5. Victoria Peak
A famous tourist destination in Hong Kong, Victoria Peak offers stunning views of the city skyline. But it’s the drive up to Victoria Peak that makes this such a special journey. As you wind your way up a steep and narrow road you get a preview of the breathtaking cityline and harbor below. Once at the peak, you’ll get the full spectacle – panoramic views and a unique perspective of Hong Kong you won’t get anywhere else. Want to see the city from higher above? Face your fear of heights and don’t miss riding the famous Peak Tram for a fun and thrilling way to see a bird’s eye view of Hong Kong.
6. Shek O
Oh, Shek O, a charming seaside town that’s home to some of Hong Kong's most beautiful beaches. Ever dreamt of driving to the beach and just rushing straight into the ocean from your car? Well here’s your chance to do just that in Hong Kong! Take on a relaxing beach day getaway that’s just a drive away from the city and enjoy the white sand and clear water that’s perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports.
Alternatively, if you’d rather skip the sand, take on Hong Kong’s best hiking trail up the Dragon’s Back, which starts at the To Tei Wan bus stop on Shek O Road. This two-hour trail is relatively easy, though be warned it gets its name for its many-hilled path – kind of like you’re walking on, well, the back of a dragon! And there’s really nothing like taking in the mountaintop views of Big Wave Bay!
7. Stanley
Who can say no to retail therapy and scenic drive all in one? The coastal town of Stanley is a popular spot for shopping and culture! You can drive to the town for lunch in a Victorian-era building then head to the famous Stanley Market for some unique souvenirs, gifts, and even designer clothing!
There's much more to explore beyond the market. Take a stroll along the Stanley Promenade, which offers stunning views of the harbor and the surrounding mountains. You can also visit the historic Murray House, which was originally built in the late 19th century and has since been relocated to Stanley. But perhaps the best thing about Stanley is its relaxed and laid-back vibe. It's the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a slower pace of life.
