Bali, known as the "Island of the Gods," is a dream destination for travelers worldwide. With its stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and breathtaking landscapes, it’s no wonder millions flock here each year. However, before you can dive into Bali's paradise, it’s essential to understand the entry requirements and prepare the necessary documents.
From completing the Bali arrival form to registering for autogate access and paying the new tourism levy, there are several steps to ensure a smooth arrival. In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know — so you can breeze through immigration and start your Bali adventure stress-free!
Overview of Bali’s Entry Requirements

To enter Bali smoothly, you’ll need to meet the following criteria:
- Visa Requirements: Check whether you qualify for a Visa Exemption Arrangement (VEA) or Visa on Arrival (VOA) at the airport.
- Passport Validity: Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date.
- Health Pass: Complete the SATUSEHAT Health Pass (SSHP) before entering Indonesia.
- Autogate Eligibility: Check whether your passport qualifies for Bali’s new autogate system, then pre-register before arrival in Bali in order to use it.
- Customs Declaration: To be completed up to 3 days before arriving in Bali.

Step 1: Check whether you require a visa to enter Bali

Visa Exemption Arrangement (VEA)
Travelers with passports from the following 13 countries do not require a visa to enter Bali. This is a single-entry visa valid for 30 days.
- Brunei Darussalam
- Cambodia
- Lao PDR
- Malaysia
- Myanmar
- Philippines
- Singapore
- Timor Leste
- Thailand
- Vietnam
- Suriname
- Colombia
- Hong Kong
Visa on Arrival (VOA)
Passport holders from 97 countries are eligible for Visa on Arrival (VOA). It costs IDR 500,000 plus a service fee per person.
Visa on Arrival is for a single Entry into Bali/Indonesia, for a stay of up to 30 days, and can be extended for a maximum of 1 time at the local Immigration Office (charges apply). You can apply and pay online before arrival in Bali or pay and receive upon arrival in Bali.

Step 2: Complete the SATUSEHAT Health Pass (SSHP)
Starting 14 August 2024, all international travelers must complete the SATUSEHAT Health Pass (SSHP) before entering Indonesia. We'd recommend completing the form before boarding your flight to Bali!

Travelers from VEA (Visa Exemption Arrangement) nations and those utilizing the eVoA system are eligible to enjoy expedited passage through Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport. Children 6 years and above can also use the autogates.
All visitors intending to use the autogates must pre-register their passports online before arrival at the airport. You won't be able to pass through the gates if you skip this step — I tried. Pre-register for the autogates through the Indonesian immigration e-visa portal.
Once completed, you may use the autogates on future trips to Bali without registering again. This makes the immigration process way faster; I managed to get through within 5 minutes on my latest trip to Bali. Way faster than being stuck for 2 hours in the queue for the manual counters!
Step 4: Complete the Customs Declaration
This is something most people forget — all international travelers must complete the electronic Customs Declaration up to 3 days before arriving in Bali.
Once completed, you will receive a QR code. You will need this to pass through immigration — take a screenshot and save it on your phone, or print it out. Families can fill out one form as a group.
Step 5: Pay the Bali Tourism Levy

From 14 February 2024, international visitors to Bali are subject to a one-time fee of IDR150,000 (USD 10). This fee helps fund environmental and cultural preservation initiatives across the island.
Before arrival, you are encouraged to settle this payment via the Love Bali website or App. Be sure to check if you’re exempt from the levy, as some categories of travelers, such as those in transit, may not need to pay.
Upon payment, a tourism levy voucher will be sent via email, and the QR code can be downloaded to a smartphone or printed for scanning at checkpoints in Bali Airport and sea ports. However, I went to Bali three times in 2024, and nobody checked this.
