The sceneries during fall colors are amazing!! It was a good trip for our family. The tickets for the ramantic train sold out fast, so it is good to book early to secure a seat.

It is really convenient to buy online. If you are not satisfied with your order, you can change your seat for free. I really recommend taking the train from Kameoka Station back to Saga Arashiyama Station. The scenery is very beautiful, so remember not to get off at the wrong station.

There are so many people in Nijo Castle during the day. If you are tired of queuing, you might as well check out Nijo Castle at night. You don’t have to queue and just swipe your electronic ticket to enter. The projection sculptures inside are beautiful, there are not many people and there are some small vendors, making it very comfortable to stroll around.

A very convenient electronic ticket. It happened to be the monster season. Although you can only see the Hyakuki Night Parade on holidays, I was lucky enough to see monsters when I went on weekdays. Thank you Klook.

Tenryu-ji Temple

Step into a world where history and tranquility intertwine at Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled right outside the entrance of the Sagano Bamboo Forest. As one of Kyoto's five major temples, this 14th-century marvel invites you to explore its incredible Zen garden and immerse yourself in the serene atmosphere that has been a cornerstone of the Rinzai School of Zen Buddhism. Whether you're a history buff or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, Tenryu-ji Temple offers a perfect complement to the natural beauty of the bamboo forest.

Sagano Bamboo Forest

Prepare to be enchanted by the surreal beauty of the Sagano Bamboo Forest, the crown jewel of Kyoto's natural attractions. As you stroll along the wide trail that meanders through the dense bamboo groves, you'll be enveloped by an otherworldly atmosphere. The towering bamboo stalks create a mesmerizing canopy, and the gentle rustling of leaves in the breeze provides a soothing soundtrack to your journey. Capture stunning photos and let the tranquility of this unique landscape wash over you, making it an unforgettable highlight of your visit.

Okochi-Sanso Villa

Discover a hidden gem at the top of the hill within the bamboo grove: the Okochi-Sanso Villa. Once the home of silent film star Denjiro Okochi, this expansive complex offers more than just stunning views. Wander through beautifully landscaped gardens, explore the temple and study, and enjoy a moment of reflection in the tea hut. The villa also houses a museum dedicated to Okochi's life, providing a fascinating glimpse into the past. A visit to Okochi-Sanso Villa is a delightful addition to your bamboo forest adventure, offering both cultural enrichment and natural beauty.

Cultural and Historical Significance

The Sagano Bamboo Forest is a cultural gem, recognized as one of the '100 Soundscapes of Japan' by the Ministry of the Environment. This enchanting place invites you to immerse yourself in Japan's acoustic wonders. Nearby, the Tenryū-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers a glimpse into Japan's rich spiritual and cultural heritage. The area has long been a retreat for Japanese nobility, with its history dating back to the 8th century. The presence of Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples near the bamboo groves highlights the traditional belief in bamboo's protective and symbolic strength.

Unique Soundscape

Experience the serene and meditative soundscape of the Sagano Bamboo Forest. As the wind dances through the dense bamboo, you'll hear the gentle creaking of wood, the rustling of leaves, and the soft knocking of trunks. It's a natural symphony that soothes the soul and connects you with nature.

Local Cuisine

Arashiyama is a culinary delight, offering a range of dining experiences from casual to gourmet. Indulge in traditional Japanese sweets like yatsuhashi and matcha-flavored treats. For a more substantial meal, try the exquisite kaiseki, a multi-course dining experience, at places like Shoraian or the Michelin-starred Kyoto Kitcho. Don't miss the chance to savor wagyu beef steaks at Steak Otsuka or enjoy a refreshing vanilla/green tea soft-serve ice cream.
