Nestled in the serene highlands of Bali, Buyan Lake is a hidden gem in the Buleleng Regency, offering a tranquil escape into nature's embrace. This pristine caldera lake, located within the Bratan Caldera and surrounded by lush rainforests and volcanic landscapes, invites adventurous travelers to explore its expansive waters and the rich cultural tapestry that defines its shores. Situated in the picturesque Pancasari Village of the Sukasada District, Buyan Lake is not only known for its tranquil beauty and lush surroundings but also for its proximity to ancient temples that add a touch of cultural richness to the experience. However, recent studies highlight the pressing need for conservation efforts to preserve its pristine allure, making it a perfect destination for those who appreciate both natural beauty and environmental responsibility.

At first, I found this project based on the recommendation of Twin Lake hiking on Xiaohongshu. We made an appointment one day in advance, and the average price for two people was 394 RMB. After booking, the driver will contact us via WhatsApp the day before to set the pick-up time. We set off at 7:30 in the morning. It took about 1.5-2 hours on the road. The fog got heavier as we went north, and we experienced the feeling of "Silent Hill" in depth. After arriving at the place, we met with the guide and started a hike of about 3 hours. The guide who led us was named Kadek. He took us into the jungle and introduced us to the various plants on the road, the customs of praying to the gods, and the stories that happened on this land. On the way, we saw tough vines, more than 300 years old strangler figs, towering giant trees or giant trees broken in the rainy season, bright red flowers of wild ginger, and snow-white mushrooms. On the way, we encountered a giant tree worth remembering. The guide took the initiative to take photos and videos for us, and also shared glutinous rice with brown sugar with us. It tasted pretty good. After coming out of the rainforest, we arrived at one of the twin lakes. We took a double canoe paddled by hand, and across the lake was an ancient temple. After that, we chose to go to the waterfall first and then eat. The road to the waterfall is a bit steep, with a steep slope and many high steps. My knees are not very good, and I can persist in walking slowly. After arriving at the waterfall, you can change into a swimsuit and go into the water, but it is really cold to go into the water. My friend and I persisted for a few minutes, took a few photos and came up. There were also people sitting on the rocks in the lake pretending to meditate, which was quite interesting. Because it was too cold, we couldn't walk to such a central place. After leaving the waterfall, the guide took us to the local family, which was actually the guide cousin's home (it seems that the guide's entire family is in this project, and on the way, I met another cousin of his who led another team). I ate local Indonesian food here, which is not bad~ Kadek people are really good, and we still recommend this project!

We had a fantastic time on the Lovina Dolphin Tour! Our driver, Adi, was punctual, skillful, and had a great personality. He recommended a lunch spot, and the food was delicious! The weather was gloomy and rainy, so we didn’t expect much from the dolphin watching, but we were pleasantly surprised to spot many dolphins! Watching the boats chase the dolphins was an interesting experience. The snorkelling experience, however, wasn’t as enjoyable. Due to rough waves, we were nearly hit by the boat’s metal supporter while holding on, and there wasn’t much to see underwater besides dead coral reefs. The highlight of the day was Gitgit Waterfall. We were the only ones there, and it was a beautiful, peaceful experience without any other tourists around. Overall, it was a memorable tour with a mix of ups and downs, but definitely worth the experience, especially if you're okay with unpredictable weather.

It was an amazing tour. Learnt a lot about balinese culture and saw beautiful landmarks. Weather wasn’t great but don’t let that stop you. The fog throughout the mountains in photos at the canoes was just as breathtaking. Both tour guides were helpful and friendly.

Buyan Lake is a spiritual haven, deeply embedded in the cultural and historical tapestry of Bali. This serene lake is surrounded by ancient temples and remnants of past civilizations, offering a glimpse into the island's rich heritage. For the predominantly Hindu population, Buyan Lake is a sacred site where religious ceremonies, such as the Pakelem ceremony, are performed. These rituals, involving offerings, are believed to purify the lake and its surroundings, allowing visitors to witness and connect with the profound traditions of Balinese culture.

A visit to Buyan Lake is incomplete without indulging in the vibrant flavors of Balinese cuisine. The local dishes, such as Babi Guling (suckling pig) and Lawar (a spiced meat salad), are a testament to the region's culinary prowess. These traditional dishes, crafted with local ingredients and spices, offer a delightful taste of Bali's unique gastronomic heritage.

Environmental Challenges

Buyan Lake faces environmental challenges due to human activities like agriculture and fishing. These activities contribute to the lake's shrinkage, with pollution from nitrates and phosphates leading to increased biomass growth. This threatens the delicate ecosystem of the lake, highlighting the need for sustainable practices to preserve its natural beauty for future generations.
