Walk-Through Aviary
The highlight of the Edward Youde Aviary is its massive walk-through aviary. Here, visitors can stroll through lush greenery and observe a diverse array of bird species up close. With around 600 birds present, it's a birdwatcher's paradise and a delightful experience for all ages.
Waterfowl Lake
Linked to the aviary by an inner lake, the Waterfowl Lake is landscaped to resemble a swamp, accommodating various species of waterfowl such as the Australian Pelican, Great White Pelican, and Radjah Shelduck.
Caged Display Area
Some of the aviary's larger and more predatory birds, like the White-Crested Hornbill and Great Pied Hornbill, are housed in three smaller display cages. These displays offer visitors a close-up view of these magnificent birds.
Cultural and Historical Significance
The Edward Youde Aviary is named after Sir Edward Youde, the Governor of Hong Kong from 1982 to 1986. The aviary is built over a natural valley at the southern corner of Hong Kong Park, which is located at the bottom of the northeastern slope of Victoria Peak. The area was previously occupied by a barracks and is now a lush sanctuary for birdlife.
Local Cuisine
While the aviary itself does not offer dining options, visitors can explore the nearby Central district for a taste of Hong Kong's vibrant culinary scene. Popular local dishes include dim sum, roast goose, and wonton noodles, offering a delightful blend of flavors that reflect the city's rich cultural heritage.
