Having been across many HR teams, I've seen the ups and downs of navigating a career in today's ever-changing work environment, from finding that work-life balance to overcoming self-doubt and facing workplace conflicts. Leading my team at Klook, while juggling life as a mom and a travel enthusiast, has taught me so much. In the spirit of #HelpEachOther, one of our PATH core beliefs, let me share a few nuggets on how we could successfully navigate the workplace of today.
Foster a supportive culture with open communication and feedback
One of the biggest takeaways from my career is the power of a truly supportive work culture, giving employees room to share openly and listen actively. There was a time when life threw me a curveball, and my leader at the time went beyond just offering professional support to show genuine empathy towards my situation. That exemplary behavior made me realize that the best leaders are the ones who can create a space where everyone feels comfortable expressing their thoughts and feelings.
Our PATH core beliefs (Push boundaries, Ask for and give feedback, Take ownership, Help each other) serve as guiding principles for how we act, behave, and think at Klook, with the goal of fostering a supportive environment for our growth and well-being. I was heartened to hear this culture of open communication and feedback at play during an internal webinar in conjunction with International Women’s Day, where a few female employees shared personal stories and how they were able to navigate change smoothly during their careers and in their personal lives.
Be adaptable and open to change
Through the years, I’ve realized that being open to change is not just about taking on new roles but also about embracing new ideas and learning from them. Career growth isn’t just about climbing the corporate ladder the traditional way anymore. It can also involve lateral moves, exploring different job functions, or even relocating to a different place altogether.
Staying relevant and at the top of your game requires a growth mindset. Thankfully, there are so many ways to upskill or reskill ourselves today that’s not limited to classroom training or online courses; it can even come from things like reading and seeking mentorship. In this way, change becomes something not to fear but to welcome, as it brings opportunities for development and innovation.
Set boundaries and prioritize self-care to achieve work-life harmony
Balancing the demands of work, family, and personal passions is no small feat. Learning to say 'no' and dedicating time to recharge has been crucial for maintaining my wellbeing. This doesn't mean I have it all figured out; it's a continuous process of understanding what works best for me.
Everyone has their own ways of fulfilling their personal responsibilities and commitments. Prioritization, to me, is a regular exercise. Work takes precedence on weekdays, but I try to reserve my weekends for family time. To me, it’s about the quality of these moments where being fully engaged and present is what matters to me.
Taking time out for self-care is also crucial; it’s about finding that sweet spot where I can give my best at work and home without compromising my health and happiness. At Klook, we recognize the importance of offering the necessary support and flexibility to accommodate the needs of our workforce. Even before COVID, we weren't an organization that adhered strictly to a nine-to-five schedule; we've always been flexible and we’re continuing to practice that as a core part of our work culture.
Having a community helps
Perhaps the most comforting lesson of all has been realizing that I'm not alone in this journey. Whether you're a seasoned working professional or just starting out in your career, facing these obstacles can be daunting.
The support from colleagues, friends, and family has been my pillar of strength. Whether it's celebrating successes or facing obstacles, knowing there are people who have your back makes all the difference. This sense of community is something I strive to build within my team at Klook—a space where everyone knows they are supported and valued.
Looking ahead
Life at work is a journey with lots of learning along the way, and that’s why I believe we should seize every opportunity that comes our way. At Klook, we’re constantly building an environment where everyone feels empowered to share their ideas, embrace their unique journeys, and use their experiences to support one another. Here’s to all your successes and learning opportunities ahead!
